There are a lot of things to think about when considering breast implants. I try to simplify things by walking my patient’s through the 4 S’s of breast augmentation. I think they bring clarity to the process.
Silicone or Saline?
Both breast implants are made of a silicone outer shell. Saline implants are filled during surgery with salt water whereas silicone are pre-filled with liquid silicone. Both implants meet with FDA approval. Now, “gummy bear” implants for a more a more natural look is available. Gummy bear implants are a good choice for women undergoing breast reconstruction. Additionally, some clients want to have some of their own fat transferred from their back or waistline to their breasts. This generally works best if you want only a slight enhancement, or if it is needed to make the breasts more symmetrical.
Sizing is always the big question. No one wants to go too big, but after all it is called a breast enhancement. The patient care coordinator will help you try on a variety of sizes and styles to help you find the look you want. After thorough examination, the surgeon advises you according to what is aesthetically appealing based on your measurements, the evenness of breast size, and tissue thickness. Ultimately, it is what you like and want.
The incision may be placed using a peri-areolar (around the areola) incision, the inframammary crease (under the breast) or transaxillary (in the armpit) approaches. No matter where the incision is placed, I include a free LASER treatment designed to reduce redness, and to flatten the scar. This is a big plus because it gives a better aesthetic result.
Different style implants can be used depending on how you want it to look. For example, high profile implants have a more rounded look. A moderate profile gives you a more natural result. Silicone implants have a more natural appearance and feel. Additionally, shaped anatomical implants like “gummy bear” implants may be used. Our surgeon will do a full examination and help you choose what is best for your body type.
