At the Laser Center of Maryland we use Broadband Light treatments to treat rosacea. BBL treatments are a great alternative to taking medications for long periods of time.
What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a very common skin disease that affects people over 30. Generally, rosacea causes areas of redness on your nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead. In some cases, patients also develop little bumps and pimples on those red areas.
What causes rosacea?
The causes of rosacea aren’t very well understood. Rosacea is based in an irritation of the skin. It tends to affect people who have fair skin or blush easily, and there seems to be a genetic correlation. Rosacea flares up when a “trigger” causes the blood vessels in the face to expand, which makes the skin red. Triggers are sun and wind exposure, exercise, stress, spicy foods, hot baths, and alcohol.
How does BBL work?
At the Laser Center of Maryland, we deliver light energy through the BBL system to the target areas. The upper layers of the skin are gently heated with the BBL. This heat is absorbed by the skin and it has two effects. First, the heat from the photothermal energy builds in the vessels, causing them to shrink or disintegrate. Second, the heat stimulates the skin cells to regenerate and build new collagen in the area. This firms and clears the skin. Rosacea is not curable, but our BBL treatments dramatically improve the visible signs.
How does treatment work?
In our broadband light treatments, we protect your eyes with safety glasses. You’ll feel a warm sensation, and a feeling like a rubber band snap when we deliver the light bursts. There isn’t any need for topical anesthetic, as the procedure is easily tolerated. There isn’t any downtime, either.
Number of treatments
We recommend from one to three BBL treatments to address your rosacea. These should be space from four to six weeks apart.
