Unless you’re Carl Spackler or otherwise work at a golf course, moles probably don’t really bother you. At least the skin variety. Moles are growths on the skin that are usually black or brown. They can appear anywhere, and they’re common — most of us have between 10 and 40 moles by the time we’re adults that we may consider getting a Mole Removal procedure.
But, unless you’re Cindy Crawford, most people don’t like having moles poking out in certain places such as on your neck, face, or hands. At the Laser Center of Maryland we can zap those moles away in just minutes.
Most everyone has a few moles and most of those are harmless. Over the years, moles can change slowly. They can become raised and they can change color. Some will have hair growing out of them. Some even disappear over time. Most moles are not dangerous. Moles that are more likely to be cancer are those that look different than your other existing moles, or if they first appeared after you turned 30.
What causes a mole to form?
Occasionally, your skin cells grow in a cluster instead of being spread across the skin. These cells are the melanocytes and they make the pigment that gives skin its natural color. Sun exposure, teen hormone fluctuations, and pregnancy can all make your moles darken.
How we get rid of them
At the Laser Center of Maryland we put our UltraPulse Laser to work zapping moles, skin tags, and other growths. We first inject some local anesthesia into the mole. Next, the doctor views the unwanted mole through an operating microscope, which allows precise removal of unwanted tissue without damaging the surrounding skin. If the growth was suspicious, we biopsy it first before removal. When directed at the mole, the laser pulses hundreds of times per second. Its accuracy and short duration prevent heat from damaging the surrounding skin, plus it minimizes the risk of scarring.
How long does it take, and does it hurt?
The mole removal procedure takes just minutes, and because we inject the mole with lidocaine prior to removal patients say they do not feel anything during the procedure.
