ASPS annual statistics

Each year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons releases data on what procedures are gaining in popularity and what’s on the way out. Overall, cosmetic procedures were up 5%, with a 6% increase in minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures and a 2% decrease in more major procedures. Overall, 15.1 million cosmetic procedures were performed.

Botox is still king! Once again, Botox was the most performed procedure. All told, over 6 million Botox treatments were performed, representing a 3% increase.

Filler Up! Minimally-invasive procedures are gaining popularity and fillers are at the forefront of this treatment trend. The most popular fillers are still hylauronic acids (Juvderm®, Perlane®, Belotaro® and Restylane®). Treatment increased 18% with these products. Expect this trend to continue with the recent popularity of products like Sculptra® and Artefill®.

LASERS are in: Both laser resurfacing and intense pulsed light showed gains in popularity. As people want to improve facial appearance with less down time, these minimally-invasive procedures really fit the bill. Many patients are opting for combinations of fillers and laser, over traditional surgical procedures.

Hair today, gone tomorrow! Although laser hair removal has been around for a long time, its popularity is still increasing. Men and women alike see this as both an improvement in appearance and a convenience.

Not just for women… Male surgeries continue to increase. Of note there was a 5% uptick in surgery for gynecomastia alone.
